Akwesasne police say physique present in river was man linked to migrant deaths probe

MONTREAL — Police in Akwesasne say a physique discovered this month within the St. Lawrence River is that of a person related to the investigation into the deaths of eight migrants.

Police say the coroner’s workplace has recognized the lifeless man as Casey Oakes, 30, an area resident who had been lacking since March.

His boat had been discovered close to the our bodies of eight migrants who died whereas making an attempt to cross illegally into america by means of Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, which straddles provincial and worldwide boundaries and contains areas of Quebec, Ontario and New York state.

The our bodies of members of two households have been pulled from the St. Lawrence River in Akwesasne, about 130 kilometres southwest of Montreal, on March 30 and 31.

4 of the migrants have been from India, and 4 have been from Romania.

Authorities have mentioned the world’s geography makes it a preferred spot for human smugglers.
